In the recent hit film Wanted, Common takes on the persona of assassin Gunsmith, which he portrays alongside Hollywood heavy weights Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman; a strong silent role which Common continues to embody.
In the last 3 years Common has shared the screen with Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker, commanding the screen as a heroin dealer, a gangster and an action role in the 4th installment of The Terminator (Terminator Salvation), which he is currently filming. In the film he plays freedom fighter Barnes, who is the right hand man to John Connor—who, in the film is the leader of the human resistance.
In the meantime, he continues to juggle rapping, acting and the recent release of his hat line Soji, in conjunction with the brand La Coppola Storta; a brand hand crafted in Sicily. Together, they blended a Sicilian tradition with the artistry of Common and created a hat line which gives traditional newsboy hats a trendy twist.
In addition, he has stayed focused on his first love as a lyricist and is on the helms of the Fall release of his upcoming album “The Invincible Summer” which he recorded with The Neptunes. Yet, it’s his passion for literacy which has Common scribing children’s books for the youth.
Illustrated installments like “The Mirror and Me” speak directly to teens about peer pressure which he solves through rhyme and reason. In the visual journey, we follow Kyre; a young South African boy who is trying to adjust to a new school in New York City. We follow Kyre on his journey through peer pressure and self esteem issues which ultimately lead him to the mirror where he questions his true self.
“I wrote the children’s books to deal with being yourself,” states Common and continues “One thing about me is that I love to create and also want to reach the young kids. I wanted it to be in a pleasurable way and increase their literacy.”
Passionate about the youth, he continues to give back to youth causes. As founder of the Common Ground Foundation, the acclaimed rapper launched the program to provide support to children with AIDS in addition to students who are pursuing careers in the arts.
A big heart combined with pure talent makes this rising star one to watch as he continues to soar to new found heights of success!
